...the tracks are made out of hardened steel immensely stronger than the wheels. They figured out long ago it was a lot easier to change a wheel than a length of track

could enough heat build up due to friction to soften the tracks?...the tracks are made out of hardened steel immensely stronger than the wheels. They figured out long ago it was a lot easier to change a wheel than a length of track

That is correct. A metal "tyre" is shrunk onto the main wheel assembly.
