Over time there has been many discussions and theorys as to why Ford rated their V903 at 290hp compared with the same engine being rated by IH at 320HP.

The attached extract from the latest VT&C (towards the end of the page) explains the difference in how the advertised HP ratings came about.

A little off topic, but has anyone noticed that lawn mower engines aren't rated by horsepower anymore. Several years ago there were legal proceedings against several manufactures over the horsepower rating of engines, as a particular engine could have several different horsepower ratings, dependant on which sticker was on the top of the engine. This meant consumers would pay more for what they thought was more powerful unit, even though the same engine was fitted to the standard model. The outcome was that engine manufactures now rate their engines at the maximum torque they produce, because even though the horsepower developed may change with the rated speed of a particular engine (or the sticker), the torque rating will remain the same for that engine series.
