Commer type oil bath filter

Hi,
Anyone remember those twin oil bath filters that used to run up the back of the Commer cabs?
Can't recall if they were for the "knocker" engines or the Perkins.
I realise that oil baths are old hat nowadays, but I thought in their day they did the job well.
I came across a minor hiccup where I mounted the original air cleaner on the engine (was only ever a stopgap solution so I could run it.
Looked at a couple of those "K&N" type conical "Sport" air cleaners, would be an ideal solution as far as mounting goes. Impregnated with oil, some revues say you turf them away after 12 months and replace them. Going by what I've read, primarily for petrol engines, but they do say they have applications in stationary engines as well as tractors .
Any of you blokes ever used them in diesel application and if so, did they do the job?
Engine is a 2.5 litre, turbo inlet is close enough to three inch.

Dunnno ,but I could wander down the back yard and look ....incidentally ,the V8 petrol also had the same setup with two aircleaners........Very much doubt Donaldson ,more like Vokes on a pommy truck,or maybe AC also made oilbath aircleaners...........Quite a few diesel motors been blown up with oilbath cleaners ,brother came very close on his tractor.....if the top wasnt loose ,it would have gone for sure.

Dave, lots of blokes in the "jacked up, wide wheel, turbo diesel 4x4" fraternity use those K&N type air cleaners. I've never heard of one giving trouble.

One problem with K&N oiled filters is people forget to clean and re-oil them.

You need to do it roughly monthly to get the best out of them and it's a dirty messy job so people put it off and do something more appealing.

We used oiled filters on our Australian Safari car and when looking in the intake after 9,000km of Aussie Outback it was spotlessly clean.

Conversely we used the same type filters on a Porsche rally car and the inlet was full or bulldust. Never figured out why but I do know Porsche engines cost a lot more then Range Rover engines to rebuild.

Thanks, Paul. Decided may just be able to make one good cab out of the two I have here. Put on hold temporarily, converting carport to covered in garage/spray booth, get it in out of the weather. Cheers. Dave_64

GQ Patrol about that intake size Dave.
Two filters in line, should be plenty at wreckers.
Elements not cheapest, but can be blown out in
between replacement periods.
If you want the appearance of the above cab air
intakes, run a Vokes pre cleaner. Used on 760
Dodges, tractors, V4 Wisconsins and the like.
Just some thoughts, Paul.
