.
I dont think there is a problem at all with the 903 and Jakes these days.........

How ever .........in the early days , ( Many Many Moons Ago ) when the 903 first appeared
there was a major problem , ...........
Jakes were not only disconnected , but were removed till the problem was sorted.......
For the life of me i just cannot remember exactly what the problem was .....BUT it was fixed........
As i recall it was more to do with the way the Jake housings were bolted to the head and rocker gear.........
I know there was some shimming involved.............
So if the Jakes are mounted correctly (what ever that means )...there should be no problems at all ..........
There is still a lot of stories of bad things from the good old days.................

....................Billy.............
Thinking ..thinking........it may have had something to do with breaking rocker arms. ????????????

I CAME INTO THIS WORLD WITH NOTHING & STILL HAVE MOST OF IT.........................

I used to be a truck driver,
but i am now not a truck driver ,
on a good day i can remember
that i used to be a truck driver.

Always stories Billy, matter of sorting the gossip from facts.
Used to hear Jakes wore the piston ring grooves prematurely. Must be a heap of motors with that problem by now!

Most Volvo buses of the 80s and 90s using the 10 litre engine from 245 to 320 hp variety had a shutter housing around the turbo outlet and then the butterfly shutting of the exhaust was within a foot of the turbo. Scania 11 litre motors were pretty much the same.

Subject to no damage being done to the turbo, in my uneducated way of being a non-thinker, the further away from the engine the longer for the effect to take place as the gases need to compress to work.

Seems I vaguely recall some of those early SGV exhaust brakes had a minor problem which was cured by running a waste gate.
The Yank Williams "Blue Ox" fitted to many early 6 cylinder Crummins motors was also very popular before Jakes arrived.

I always felt that exhaust brakes were about as effective as dragging your foot out of the door..............

And if you ever pulled the head off a donk that was using an exhaust brake, the head and inlet manifold
looked as though someone had thrown a couple of shovels full of garbage there in ............

Back in the 80's the mob I worked for had a fleet of Leyland Tigers with TL11 engines and pneumo-cyclic boxes. They started to burn out pistons and after a lot of investigation by us and Leyland, both here and in the UK, it turned out that they had been retro-fitted with SGV exhaust brakes. They were powered via dash mounted switch and triggered in the usual way by micro switches on the pump when at idle.

It turned out that the drivers were switching on the exhaust brake when they started the shift and leaving it that way all day, even when stopped and idling away, causing a build-up of carbon and lots of excessive heat, causing the failures. The problem was solved by having them triggered entirely by a foot operated valve.
