WHAT IS IT ?? was created by grumpy
It's not so much a challenge or a quiz.

I opened up a container of 3500 series engine parts that just came into Saudi fronm Kuwait. amongst all the junk in there I found an unusual looking piece of gear.

Even Caterpillar online could not help me. The local Cat dealer here in Saudi knows all about camel and goat hobbles, but nothing about Cat Special Tools.

The part number is 9U-5131. The parts description is "wrench".

Grumpy - For once, I'm stumped, too. I've been through my "little" Tool Guide (1985 and 3" thick) and the "big" Tool Guide (1987 and 4" thick), and the numerical tool listings do not go as high as 9U-XXXX numbers in either of those books.
The highest tool part number in the '87 book is 1U-XXXX.

Accordingly, all I can tell you, is that it's a very late model tool, because of the 9U P/N prefix .. and I'm surprised I can't find something on it via Google.
No doubt it's a highly specialised 3500 series tool, but I do not have any idea what it could be for.
I could hazard a guess that it goes over some kind of round locknut or coachnut, and it's locked to the nut. A socket would then be slipped over the hexagon and the nut unscrewed.

Cheers - Ron.

It's got me stumped too Ron.

I got a library similar to yours here but I gotta get a book like the one you have to the left of the Service Newsletters Folder.........stress relief ??

The wrench has got to be at least 4 years old though. The delivery dockets that were attached to the box give the part number, part description etc., and are dated 22-06-07. I am thinking maybe camshaft. I will know in a day or two if it is for that.....got a 3516 with torn up cam lobes that we unloaded about an hour ago.

Grumpy,

Do those 4 smallest grub screws at the edge of the end plate, hold/secure the end plate to the barrel???
& if you remove them, does it come apart?
or does end plate spin/turn on the barrel??

Are the 2 empty holes in the end plate threaded??

Sorry mate just thinking aloud :)

The four small grub screws in the end of the barrel at the end opposite the big hex nut are coated with a blue locking compound, similar to the compound you see on self locking bolts. Even a long search through the Cat 3500 series Dis-assembly/Assembly manual last night failed to throw any light on what the "special tool" is used for. Maybe today will tell when we start tackling the camshaft replacement job.
