Kingpin oil? was created by ashmenz0
Hi Folks
I am told that our old bus has a Leyland front axle and both kingpins have a "bit" of slop in them.

There appears to be an oil reservoir on the top of the kingpin, with a brass bung in the top . Is this what it is, and if so can anyone recommend what oil should go in them?

Thanks

Ash

I have only ever seen grease nipples on kingpins. Can you put a photo up ?

They are greasers.
You take the cap off, fill the cap up with grease, and then as you screw it down it forces the grease in.

It's not fitted with "button" grease nipples is it?
Lots of Leyland buses were fitted with these.

From memory some Albion's & Scammells had king pins that used an oil and not grease.

Hi,
We got a new Beaver in 1964 and it ran heavy gear oil in the King Pins. The oil we used was Mobil Lube GX140. The grease nipples were of the button head type.

Hi Atkipete, I will try and put up a photo when I have a chance.

At the top of the kingpin there is a "reservoir" that sort of looks like the cover you put on our towball. This has a brass plug screwed into the top which is quite big. (It takes a 20mm spanner)

Hi Bigcam, do you mean take the whole unit off or just the cap in the top of it?

Hi Busntruck, I am not sure what a "button" grease nipple is. It has a standard grease nipple on the very bottom of the kingpin though.

Hi 14B-Beaver, it may have had oil inside as it is pretty clean down in the hole.

Will try and work out the whole picture thing and get one up here.

Thanks very much to everyone, Your help is very much appreciated.

Cheers

Try this pic. Looking down with the bung removed from the top of the cap.

Its looks like a pot for "FLOWABLE GREASE" as used in "Albion" brand gearboxes, Leyland on board greasing systems etc. Shell Rentinax Grease CS00, semi-fluid for centralised lubrication systems, i have a 2.5 kg tin, probably comes in all sizes.
