Thanks for the Perkins update. I have edited my post in haste while I can. I hate having mistakes live forever, but this forum has a 24 h curfew for editing.
Why did a Perkins need the air grille to be retained when others didn't? Or, was this the reverse: the airflow was increased when the Perkins was installed?

There is one up here with a 6/354 in it, but the V8 510 and 540's are popular.
I think I've said this before, the Perkins does 2,800 RPM so it saves changing the diff ratio.

Roderick, the big mesh panel you see will be for the radiator.
The air will be drawn in via the roof scoop and then out through the radiator.

Agreed, and the intake is clearly a scoop at roof level, but then why do so many others have a rounded sheet-metal panel, and not mesh? Which version was original, and which was retrofit?

The closed panels would be original. The mesh panel would be a modification.
