The big Bedford was a very solid truck ,with the 500 motor it had a bit of power too.......With a 6/53 and a 510 roadranger ,you have a solid ,reliable truck ......very noisy to drive ,tho ,and hard to do any major work on ....but it was surprising how good access was with the flip up panels ,and the motor set well back.....Its a pity the later tilt cab models didnt come out here, but GM/H decided to go with Isuzus ,and the big ones had garbage motors and gearboxes for years.

Used to drive a Bedstead for Cannel 9. Originally had 500 and 5 speed, 2 speed diff. Later swapped out for 6V53 and 510. With the 2 speed, you sure had plenty of gears.
The noise, use to love it. Coming through the centre of Melbourne, peak hour, splitting every gear, with the 5 inch pipe out the side. As Swishy would say, heaven.

I dont care what any of the super truckers or truckies of yester year say, those 53 series screamers are horrible things to drive and be riding in
I hear and read lots of stories and can only conclued eithet Im the world's biggest sook or peoples memories are shot
71 and 92 series GM's are ok but no so for the smaller noisy sibbling
Paul

Nothing beats the sound of a 8V71 with the original Spiraflow muffler like a few of the early ghosts.

The 53 s had straight paddle two lobe blowers that were a major cause of noise.......they always reckoned you could still hear the motor 3 hours after it stopped.,and nothing much else.....All the morons who never driven a truck are now crapping on about them.......make me sorry I put a 6/53 in the scrap bin at the sandblasters.....took a 6v71 home ,it should have gone in the scrap.
