from the mailbox....

Hi there, I hope this email finds you well. I have recently purchased an old Bedford with the idea to restore it. I was wondering if you could help me out with the exact ID of it? I was sold it as a J1, but believe it may be a J2. I have attached a photograph of the two ID plates on the firewall so hope these may help out.

Kind regards
Kris

At an all-up weight of two and a half tons I think the J1 guess may be correct. Singles or duals?

Thye body plate says it is a TJ.

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

I think T = truck, and J = series.

It seems Kris is trying to identify what size J series he has.

I can't quite make out if the spec plate says 2t - 10 cwt, or 2t - 18cwt? As Lang suggests, knowing if it has singles or duals might give a strong indication.

Certainly looks more and more like a J1

T+B magazine 1972 gives chassis weight of 3768 or 3836lbs ( might depend on tyres fitted ) and GVM of 6496 or 7480lbs . They were described as a 30cwt (1 1/2 ton).

If it has these disc wheels it is a cert to put money on a J1

The wheels are the best way of determining it Lang, as you said before J1 - singles, J2 - duals. ;)

Over two ton it's gotta be a J2.
