Point of order.....its not hypoid drive ,but either straight or spiral bevel......early bevel gear drives were notorious for breaking teeth ,and I d say thats why its so large ..........my other point is the spokes are small ,certainly nowhere near 5 ton truck size (Reo Speedwagon) .......IMHO ,the vehicle has been a light truck (1 tonner ) or a heavy car

Old diffs are full of the most marvellous sticky black gear oil......the stuff has that magic smell of old tractors and gearboxes and winches .......its a bit hard to get off hands and clothes for sure ......but Id have that diff apart ,just to see what it is ......and save the lovely black oil.
