Interesting truck. Commonwealth registration, four wheel drive. Looks like a remote tyre inflation system.
At the law courts - what about a specialist high security (armoured) prisoner wagon imported directly for the job?

IIRC, the D in ZDA indicated Defense Department.
The S on ZSU was Dept of Supply, which covered a number of agencies.

Hi Lang, the only thing that about the GMC that doesn't make it look like a paddy wagon (or to use the Brisbane term, Herschal st express) is that you can see out through the back window. My experience with paddy wagons is that the drivers compartment is definatly seperate from the rear bit.
Looks RHD and with a search light and 2 rotators it has that law enforcment look about it, perhaps MP's? ( and Lang, as much as I have limited experience with paddy wagon's, you may know a bit more about MP's? LOL.)
Would have been a very flash bit of gear back in the day. The HD Holden wagon, is it an XR Falcon? and Hillman Imp all of them look new. A heap of pipe beside the Inter as well that looks a bit out of place.

Bigcam, well spotted with the Hillman Imp mate. Yes it's an XR Falcon, can't quite read the badge on the boot but it may be a Fairmont. Cheers Tim

Oldbob, I think you might be closer than us. Maybe the fitting on the front wheel is a very accurate distance measuring device - it does not seem to be on the other wheels which would be necessary for central inflation. It is in an excellent position to be ripped off and cause them to revert to accurate pacing!
Spotlight and flashing lights might be part of the survey set-up.
Cam, certainly not military (though could be registered to Defence Department because the Army Survey Corps were the people who did all the maps before National Mapping took over)
Wonder where it is now?

Found the answer. From Mike Cecil (former curator at the War Memorial)
Interesting picture, the GMC is one of 2 Johnson Ground elevation meters that were imported to Australia circa 1964. Nat Map operated one and Royal Australian Army Survey Corps operated the other.
I can confirm that the picture was taken in the court yard of the (circa turn of 20th Century) Land Administration Building ( headquarters of the Qld Lands Department for most of 20th Century and also for many years the location of the Queensland Gov
