I remember in the 1970s Dick Unger out of Albury had a KW with a 3406 in it.......Twin 4 Spicers and called it "Devil Woman" .Used to pull doubles all over the country...think the colour scheme was red ,white and black.Don't even know what ever became of Dick or his truck..His wife ran the CB base in Albury in the '70s..........Age diminishes the memory somewhat

Cat 3408's
Yer they had their problems, i.e. the early production had a design letdown which resulted in unusual vibrations.
The later engines had a different crankshaft and as a result, (different counter weight design) required a new block as well. Brakesaver seals were a bit of a bugger too. But in the late 70's, early 80's Mack 866s, 865s, Cummins 400s and early GM 92's with bottom problems the 3408 look reasonable. Quite a few R700's were repowered. I think Lloyd Davis was the first fitted at KW Bayswater and quite a few followered. Twin Ro had one and I think when they traded it had over 1mKs with only minor repairs during its time pulling fridges.
Was told they go better with two (2) trailers. Certainly no match against the current gear. They were also used in earthmoving gear, i.e. 631s,637s,769s,988s,D9s etc, also industrial, marine and gas applications.

We have got a few 3408 (8) and 3412 (10) engines running generators on the drilling rigs in Saudi. We are still doing rebuilds on these engines and converting the older PC ones to DI. Parts are still readily available from Cat, but we do use a lot of aftermarket stuff as well from IPD. We have a policy of rolling bearings every 6000 to 7000 hours. top ovehauls at 12000 to 15000 hours and full rebuilds at 25,000 to 30,000 hours. The 3408's run at 1500 rpm while the 3412's run at 1800 rpm. The biggest problem we have is electrolysis, but we may have cured that by fitting sacrificial zinc anodes through-out the cooling system. Fair enough, these units run at a constant RPM with variable speed govenors fitted (Woodward EG3P), but we are yet to have an un-repairable failure like a "leg out of bed". I had a 3412 crank ground to 0.050" undersize. I fitted a deflection gauge across the centre main and there was noticeable bending (0.0015") when the crank was picked up from both ends. As the Cat man said "it's normal", and he was right, 9,000 hours later its still running 24/7. They are not bullet proof, but close to it.
