I seem to recall, when the Flying Scotsman reached Perth, the effort of the lengthy drag across the Long Paddock must have been too much for her, 'cos they found she had a broken crankpin! .. :'(

IIRC, they rounded up Willis Engineering, a local train buff, who has done a lot of Loco repair work, and Willis' fabricated a new crankpin for her, and it was fitted right here in Perth.
So she took a big chunk of good ole Aussie steel in her heart, back to Pommyland .. but I'll wager a lot of Poms don't know that, as they brag about, "foine English engineering!" .. :D

Flying Scotsman in Australia
I remember a film on tv about that, they had a helicopter filming them as they travelled three abreast, fantastic




I had the pleasure of riding behind it on it's 1st Passenger Carrying Run from Sunshine to Albury and return. It was meant to be limited to 80km/h but was leaving the rucks on the Hume for dead. Rumour is someone forgot to tell the drivers the speedo was in mph and speed limit in km/h.

The time that was in Australia was the last time a lot of the old steam men got a run before retiring. All trips were meant to be limited to 80 km/h but a lot of things 'just happened' as the drivers and crew were having fun. When the Scotsman left Melbourne on its journey to Alice Springs etc they arrranged for 2 Victorian R Class Steam Trains to run paralllel to Seymour. In order to do this all the other trains had to be stopped inthe area so one could run 'wrong way'. At Heathcote bank the Scotsman was timed at 60 mph, The R Class train I was in was overtaking it but slowly when the R Class in the centre shot through like we were both stopped. Somehow the speed recording charts were 'lost in transit' to prevent people getting in trouble

Onetrak you are off track a bit
It was 3810 that had the failure
After towing it with the diesel for many hours accross the nullobor to conserve water an coal they cracked the regulator andthe bearing began to knock
They came to a stand and removed the rod and continued on.
they stripped the gear off the broken side
and it still made it under it's own power
with one side doing the work......
Apparently the old girl dose not like to be towed
and must be made to work a bit to keep the bearings cooler.............Mark

Old dog - Thanks for the correction. My memory was a bit hazy, and I could find nothing about the incident. Now that you have jogged the brain cells into wakefulness, I found two small items about it on the 'Net. At least I was correct, in that Ian Willis repaired her .. oh, and you did mean Loco 3801, didn't you, not 3810? .. :)

She sure is a big Mother, no wonder I confused her with the Flying Scotsman. Those drivers are massive.
