Next part of the day was spent doing what I do best, swearing. The idea was to remove the gibbhead key by welding a lump of steel down both sides of the key, connect the slide hammer up and give what for, yeah right. Turns out that the Chinesium chain supplied with the slide hammer doesnt handle the forces dealt out. Straightened some links so much they were almost straight. By the time I rigged a proper chain up all the heat from welding had gone. Not to mention the Chinesium hook the chain was rivetted to bent like a bannana. So tye gibbhead key is still in place.

Played with spare fuel tank n can solder a patch over the whole bottom. Fitted a new spring to the cold start needle then removed the valves, faced them in the lathe then lapped them in. New head gasket is some weird plastic feeling stuff.

I found with a Ronny, that you want to do those head gaskets with no fire ring up pretty tight, lest they blow out.

Yes I thought it strange not to have a fire ring. Come to think of it I cant remember if the old one had it.

Just checked and the original paper gasket never had a fire ring either. The new gasket is an unknown type to me as it is rigid and feels like a type of plastic. Must adk Rob from oldtimerengines what it is.

I have soaked those style head gaskets in water for some time and they soften up and then pulled them down tight and had no issues

They were more of a fiber type of gasket than plastic
I'm talking about head gaskets with no fire ring

Yes Paul, old gasket, now in 2 pieces was a fibre type of gasket. I to have soaked some old gaskets to swell them up and soften them and refit with great success,

To remove gibb key, First move flywheel in or away from head of key. Only needs to move .5mm and key will come out. J D
