Welcome to the forum
I think a lot depends on what you want out of it
If you wanna cruise along at 100 and zoom up and down hills all day towing the van into head winds and maintain a good speed is a lot different than than poking along 80 and dont mind dropping a few cogs on a climb

Don't go diesel, LS with carb conversion if you aren't into electronics.

Diesel is over rated garbage in something the size of the 300. An LS is the same aluminium V8 as found in Holdens from about 1999 on, cheap to buy, plenty of power, light, easy to get parts for, reliable and efficient.

Thanks heaps, an option to consider, mate had early V8 Holden, pretty sure he's still alive, must catch up and find out his opinion.

Whats in the 300 now? A 245? Ive got a couple of V8 Dodges myself, even a conversion to 318 will be way better than the 245, they are only good for boat anchors.

245, low miles but needs 'upgrade' of some sort to be reasonable tow vehicle, how do you like the 318 I assume would bolt straight onto current gearbox, worth doing web search see whats available.

You cant beat a late(77-79) Dodge 318 proper truck motor, not a car donk, with the Carter super economy carb.better fuel mileage than many diesels. But,where to find one? Also most have been hotrodded by idiots, and will need a new camshaft, and manifold. Not to mention the original exhaust manifolds. So,the next choice as I see it would be a box Chev small block.Youll have to buy adaptors, unfortunately, pushing up the cost.Regards John.
