Gday all,
Just going through some old pics and I thought this may interest somebody ? I could have bought it but said No as I have not got facilities to work on it. I found a Foden fanatic who was grateful :)
This old girl is not available For Sale, as it is currently being restored.
It sold for $100 a couple of years ago ! as seen here.
I am trying to find out how it is getting on but the owner is very difficult to contact.
Its 1969, C/No. 67078 with a Gardner 6LX 180 (originally 6LX150)
It had a block carrier/loader body see pics..

The cab was mainly in one bit, but I do know the owner is replacing much of the timber cab framework with hand-cut hardwood pieces.
There is stuff like this all over the UK, finding it is the problem.

Cheers
RS :)

I remember those brick hoists, sort of a home made Hiab crane. Foden didnt do too well here after about 1960, the Melbourne dealer changed over to Atkinson.

Gday Pete,

Yes it was an interesting old thing which had been sat for about 9 years. Not a bad buy for $100 though, as a project.

Did you get Gardners over there ?

Cheers

Roland,

We certainly got lots of vehicles with Gardners. Generally even Fodens!

I don't have a photo online at the moment of it. But one of our members even has a 8 cylinder gardner foden!

There is also a couple of narrow gauge loco's around running Gardner's.

Nice one, Roland. Bargain for $100. Saw my first Gardner-engined truck for a while a week ago. Pre-Aussie cab Atkinson. Only the second one I've seen down here.

Roland The Fodens were a pretty tough old Lorry
I think the heat in AUS killed them, they all seemed to
have cooling problems over here.
I remember "Highway Haulage" Sydney had a few.
They had a few 8 wheelers with the fold out wind sreen
carting sand and gravel many moons ago.
Nothing wrong with the Gardner 6LX 6 LW engines
Friends of mine have one in their old trawler
it wuuld have to be over 40 years old and still going strong.Mark

Gday OD

I am not knocking the Foden at all.
The S model (I think it is) here was quite Simply an Old Design, with all the problems beaten out in Later models.

When I was offered this beast for $100 I looked at the engine and quickly worked out that the rest of the truck and bodywork was Free !

The Gardner engine is quite magnificent, as a 'Plodder'. Its a masterpiece of old Late Victorian engineeering that met the needs of the day.
The basic design did not lend itself to modern Hi Speed requirements.

If I had the facilities I would have bought it just for the engine.

I am sure there are many low speed users of the Gardner running all over the world, just like your mates with the Trawler.

Cheers
