I used to specialise in "bodging" LNT8000 Louisvilles .......and when the kingpins came loose in the axle beam,used to rebore and sleeve........but that was banned,and Lois owners didnt like paying anyway......so next move was to grind down the kingpin to a tight fit in new unreamed bushes,and pack up the slack in the axle eye with hard steel shim......and loctite...........One time at the pits the inspector said he could smell loctite,but their plates would pull the wheel off if I had bodged it......didnt ,it passed.

You could hardchrome the pins to increase the diameter to make them a tight fit in the axle ..............when Mack made their own axles ,the kingpins were tapered,so could never come loose.......leylands used tapered kingpins too.

Somebody else on here wrote some time back of having kingpins re-chromed and new bushes reamed to suit, fair while ago, didnt say how successful it was, though.
Apologies for getting off track, seems to happen a lot on here, but DO get some good hints and tips!

There used to be a bloke in Sydney called Jack Pryer, he was into modifying any thing you could think of............
He was into racing cars as well...........Dunno if anyone remembers the PRAD racing car , driven by Clive Adams.......
The PRAD name came from PRyer and ADams...........
Anyhow , part of Jacks work came from shrinking axle king pin eyes......when i was at Kenworths he shrunk
quite a few for us............how did he do it ?? i have no idea .......every thing about the axle looked original , no welding
or grinding, no bushing , just nothing you could see............and the fit was spot on..................
I said to him one day , how do you do it ? .......He said..... i just shrunk it, thats all.............
He was a real wizard with anything metal,

Hey all. I’ve been too busy to get much done lately so sorry for no content. Shot some black paint around places but that’s really it for the work I’ve done.

On the other hand my kingpin bushing woes continue. Took them to a place that ensured they could do the job, I mentioned pilot reamers etc. I go to collect them and they tell me of the issues they are having and how much meat they are having to take out of them. Anyway, I just waited. When they gave them to me I could see it was butchered and the pins wouldn’t even go through properly. What they did was use a tapered reamer and came in from both directions. What on earth is that?? When I questioned them about it the guy told me he has been doing kingpins for 30 years and never heard of a piloted straight reamer, ‘they are always tapped’ he reckons. When I started explaining they are stuffed and I would have to get it done again he basically abused me and then told me to leave the shop as rudely as one could. This was a larger business and I was more disappointed with the service then the job. Crazy. Here is one pic, you only need one to know the whole story. Check the gap out between the bushing and pin.

No money exchanged hands. It’s more disappointing than anything. I had planned to get the front end all sorted over this holiday period. But oh well is what it is I guess.
