My slow ACCO was created by Bono
Hi guys,
My truck has been doing the rounds for some time without an real drama. Happy about that.. But, she has max speed of 80 km, but that is screaming. I dont like to push it that hard so its about 70kms. Would changing the diff centre give me longer legs. Is it that simple? I dont mind doing 80 kms, but it seems she's working real hard.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers Bono.

A real quick answer,
YES.
You got to find out what make of diff is in it now, along with what size diff centre is in it, then see what's around as a replacement for the centre you got now.
Some times it's just quicker to bolt in another diff complete, choice is yours.

Thx greenie,
i know its a rockwell diff, not sure what ratio, i'll have to find out, but at least its an option i have.
Cheers. Bono.

Be it firearms or V8 engines, the question is not "why should you have them?"
, but "who are you to demand that I justify them?"

put a tacho on. Might get a surprise, it may only be the sound of the fan you're hearing.
At least you'll be able to see for sure what revs it's doing, better measurement than "screaming"

Thanks Swishy and Eddy,
I only need the transmission and diff ratios to make that calc work. I did finally get your idea though on driving it like its stolen - really does work -lol.
Re the tacho, GM gave me a diagram of where the tacho should go but it dosent match so alll i have of the tacho is a cut cable going nowhere.
As to screaming, its not that it is just noisy, but that the machine is at its lmit. Granted not a very technical assessment but im no expert by any stretch, Thats why this is such a good site
I'lll try and get some better details
Cheers Bono.

Hi Bono,
I wanted to check the diff ratio on my Acco and was told that it is stamped on the top of the housing, I didnt have to spend too long with a wire brush to find where someone had stamped a number into the casting, not where i was told to look but in the general area. I dont remember now what the exact number was now but something like 6.2 so just the two figues and a ful stop... Looking is free.
and whatever the number was I get better than 80k with the perkins and its not flat out, I expect it will be 60mph .... my driveway is not long enough for a full test. (going for the roadworthy before xmas)

To check diff ratio:
<1> block wheel so truck dont nik off
<2> jack up one rear wheel ( we wanna C daylight under th@ wheel)
<3> Mark tyre with chalk say @ ground level
<4> release parking brake
<5> select nuetral in the cogbox the big sloppy hole
<6> mark tailshaft with chalk etc
<7> turn tailshaft n count how many turns @ tailsaft to get the tyre to do one complete revolution
Ifn Not acurate enuff turn T/Shaft till U get the tyre to do 10 revolutions then divide th@ number by 10
also U can do 100 or 1000 revolutions for more acuracy
LOL

Swishy,
this I might have to do..... Not too sure what you mean about the parking brake though, its an Acco and they just have a handle next to the seat for decoration, you can lift it up or lay it down to relieve bordom but it does nothing.
I did some maths based on your previous post
diff ratio of(6.5)= 40.38
(5.5)= 47.7
(5.0) = 52
(4.5)= 58.3 miles per hour give or take a digit.
See you in the rain Sunday

SMe again
Could B a little damp on weekend
Kneedeep Kneedeep......Kneedeep Kneedeep
LOL
Ifn the beast duz 58.3 mph
mph 58.3 mph
x 1.609344 (mph-kph conversion)
= 93.82 kph
common diff ratios from the 70's twaz 5.286:1 with an over drive cogbox = 98kph on 1000x20 or 11x22.5 rubber
Dunno why U need brakes
paid to drive it!
not stop it!
