To beavertail or not??? was created by HeyCharger
Hi Guys. Just bought this ramp set for my newly acquired '83 Hino.
Don't know whether or not to beavertail the rear of chassis (taking into account cost).
Also, it did not come with rams. Distance between ram attach point is a fraction over 1m. I'm thinking about getting a pto hydraulic pump which would then power winch (still to be purchased) and ramp.
(Added - 3.5m long).
Thoughts appreciated.
Rod.

Those Bi-fold ramps look fairly long, Rod......
Get 'em Home & sit them up on your Truck & see what they look like!!!!
If you just using Them for loading Tractors, I'd think they'd be OK..........
I'd go for P.T.O. Pump & Hyd Winch!
But That's just My preference......
Cam'd Be the Man to advise on this, I'd reckon..........

Give Malcolm Nixon at Nixon's Wagga a call for the PTO and pump, going on the age I reckon He'd have a second hand one. He'll probobly try and sell you a winch as well, and his prices are pretty good, but give me a call on the winch as well if you like, I might have a second hand spool valve too, but I'd have to look.

ok guys - don't laugh, but what do you think of this idea?
I place a (preferably 24v) winch at the rear of the truck UNDERNEATH the tray. Run the cable forward to the front of the tray (but underneath the tray), between the chassis rails. Up around a pulley and to the back of the tray - on top of the tray.
This way I can use the ONE winch to 1) pull my vehicles up onto the truck and 2) pull the (one piece) ramps up.
No need for a hydraulic power pack.
Most of these winches have in excess of 25m of cable. My tray is 7m. Ramps just under 4m. So the cable will run some 19-20m. And it's then close to the first layer, so maximum torque.
Comments appreciated. Rod.

Rod,The Problem I can see.
That when you're raising or Lowering the Ramp/s, with a Load on.
Tha Cable will/ could foul on the Tractor Or whatever You have as Load.......
But I may have Misunderstood Your Method...........

Eye here wot U say
But my 2c useless bit of info sez
most have winch @ front of deck n the cable lays the length of deck n gravity holds it to the deck
but u run n cable under neath U need to support cable the full length so it dont get hung up on any thing
n ifn u run it in a pipe or 'C' channel u gota crawl under to position the cable when switch n from top side to lower side of tray n then U gotta B all eyes watchen said cable th@ it dont jump out n snag something xpensive under tray
U got a good idea but bit hard to manage compered with the standard winch set up

2nd thortz
Just set up winch top side with cable run n to back as per normal n then have a snatch block @ rear of deck to run cable 4ward to snig off loads
a removerable snatch block u could also wrap around tree truck to further u're unload n ability

Another problem I think you will encounter is that the winch cable will be more or less pulling straight on the ramps, not above it very far to actually lift them, so you might find when it all line up not much lifting will happen and the winch may stall.

hayseed. I agree with what you see. I envisaged just attaching the cable to a bracket, say 1-2 ft from the hinge point. This bracket could be "an inverted L" shape, so that when the ramp is vertical, the cable attach point would be near to tray height.
Swisho. I tend to agree. It could still be mounted at front of tray.
I just cannot see the point in TWO bits of equipment (winch and hyd pack) when ONE unit could do BOTH jobs. Saves a helluva lot on cost.

U need a fulcrum lever mounter @ back of tray to run cable over th@ way it will pull up on ramps from above
most old ramps had a coily spring mounted on ramp mounting pin to assist in raise n the ramps
