...there was an article in T&BT on this exact subject way back, showing how the blokes were all rugged up with their Biggles goggles etc. going about their work....

....someone may have the magazine and the similar recollection.....cheers

This is still possible today...

MAN articualted on the way to the coachbuilders in Israel 2006 (from: www.tapuz.co.il/forums2008/archive.aspx?forumid=394 )

And a few years earlier, one of the best coach designs ever, M-B's 303

as well as the (I think) the 305. Helmet & goggles as noted elsewhere.

fully-built 305s with a chassis for clothing in Israel. Part of a huge deal in 1980 to replace old Royal Tigers. The buses were driven from Stuttgart to Triest and then ferried off to Israel. No idea whether the chassis was driven too - this would have been interesting when driving over the Alps, lol.

Swishy,

Yes its is but I have no idea why the trailer was not streched before loading... Not sure what was going on.

By the way, that's what they look like completed:

Stainless steel bodywork by Mercavim on MAN NG 363F euro 5 chassis: www.merkavim.co.il/?cmd=products.33

Here's another pic of a Royal Tiger being unloaded at the port of Haifa. The tires and steering/Wilson box controls were in a seperate box - they assembled those at the port and drove to the coachbuilders.

and those were driven there too...

This was an extremely interesting thread. It is easy for drivers to dress up like Biggles, and apparently all controls through the floor work. Did they have full instrumentation?

Good old chassis - chassis (like sheep - sheep & moose - moose).

Well she come from Tallahassee
She's got a high flyin' chassis
Maybe looks a little sassy
But to me she's real classy
Yeah my Tallahassee Lassie
Down in F.L.A
Well she's rockin' to the rag
Such a rockin' mob
Stompin' to the shake
Rocks the bony hop
Well she dances to the bop
She dances to the stroll
She dances to the wop,
whoah
She can rock'n'roll
She's my Tallahassee Lassie
She's my Tallahassee Lassie
She's my Tallahassee Lassie
Down in F.L.A
Guitar solo
Verse 2
Verse 3
Guitar solo
Come on baby, come on sugar
Come on honey , come on rolling
Yeah my Tallahassee Lassie
Down in F.L.A

As with Tatra's post, Mercedes Benz used to ( and still might ) provide the front of the bus ( or coach if you drink your tea with your little pinky in the air ) as well. The front panel with windscreen, lights panel etc. MB wanted conformity with their product, despite who built the body and despite what the body looked like. Tail lights were included as well, matching the ones used in the cars at that time, with the horizontal ridges. Now buses don't have a chassis so it looks funny when they come off the boat, the front and rear are connected by a flimsy frame so they can be driven for shipment and testing. The rear diff and engine has some short rails and the front axle has some short rails for suspension.

^same with MAN, Volvo and Scania. They'll make them if you want them but I think the standard front is something only the Germans provide.

Here's another one from way back:

One of only 10 Leyland Panther chassis assembled in Israel by Leyland Ashdod in the 70s.

and that's what they looked like built.
