Hey Swishy!
Saw a photo, just not sure where, of a Beamish jigger recovering a submarine over in Perth?
OR, have I been smoking the drapes again?
What was the story behind it, maybe post a link so we can check it out?

thanx fir u're interest
the story goes from wot me can remember
A Dutch submarine was beeched @ fremantle n the crew nikd off after the WWII had ended
the Sub was put out to tender for removal
me ol man n 2 others in his truck hitailered it to Fremantle from Melbourne to do the recovery of scrap etc
to work on the sub they needed to get it out to where they can start disposal of sed Sub
he organised a small fortilla of crafts to tow it off the beached land @ hitide
his crew removed many $$$ woth of goods
not sure of the name of sub but could B a Dutch East Indies class KX-V111
Meanwhile in Melb there was a write up of a truck travellin Melb to Perth in record time (not known th@ time) then my mother opend the front door to Feds ... they want n to kno how he was able to get the petrol as petrol rationing was still on
she told m he saved up his petrol rationin coupons
he must of returned to Melb after the project was finished with a few items
I still have a large steel cabinet (about 6'x4') and a pressure gauge about 1 foot diameter th@ we have hookd up to our workshop compressor
there were a few more pix of inside of the sub taken by a newspaper man 6x8"B+W that I have not been able to find as yet
17 Mar 1942
HrMs K VIII (Lt.Cdr. M.A.J. Derksema, RNN) arrived at Fremantle. The old submarine was not used any further because of the many defects she has

Hi,
they look like two very different subs going by the flat deck and the tower on the second one.

Another fascinating snippet of Aussie history!
Terry, maybe two different classes of sub altogether, or top one already started being dismantled?
Scrap value obviously very high at the time, rush from Melbourne to Freeo wouldn't have been undertaken lightly.
How it came to be abandoned there in the first place would make an intrigueing story in itself. If sub was attached to Dutch East Indies duty around modern Indonesia, at the time of wars end, you would think that Darwin or somewhere even along the Kimberley coast would have been easier than taking it all the way to Freeo.
Perhaps the thinking was at the time that even though a Dutch vessel, may have been sailing under orders from German High Command? But, thinking more likely Free Dutch Naval vessel, so why as Swishy says, did the crew "nick off " and abandone it and why particularly there? There's the makings of a good yarn here!
