Sort of off topic, but sort of relevent, I work for Metro trains and spent 13 years at Newport workshops maintaining the Siemens Nexus electric trains. They are equiped with both regen braking and wheel mounted Disk brakes
The regen braking on these units are controlled by a traction/ braking package that measures the overhead line voltage,
when the unit brakes, only at very low speeds (<10kmh ) or high speed, high load does the disk brakes actually operate (they are a failsafe brake system that jumps in if the regen brakes dont do as they are expected) all other braking is regen, this system turns the traction motors (AC drive) into a generator that creates load, slowing the train. If the overhead voltage is within the right range below 1500v dc, the generated power is sent back into the overhead for use by other trains.
If the overhead is not needing the "topup" the genreated power is sent to the brake resistor grid and burnt off as heat like a electric bar heater!
