1956 Unimog 401.101 needs a lot of love and lots of bits missing.
Mercedes OM636 engine

Does anyone know of any others in Australia?
Also looking for knowledge, I know nothing and it's my next project!
Also looking for OM636 engine (this one is missing bits).
Cheers,

effpeetee,
Welcome to the Forum mate. Your Unimog looks a lot smaller than the ones the Army had. I have never seen one like yours, reminds me a lot of a Haflinger. These may be Mercedes/Unimog as well but I am only guessing. I cannot help you but with a bit of luck, other members may be able to. Be patient and I am sure you will collect a lot of information and, hopefully, parts.

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

Thanks Swishy,
Does that mean I can have a sip of red wine from my own cupboard? Today is wine night in our house and it is still too cold for beer but if you come to visit, there is always a cold one waiting.

Effpeetee, that refers to an in-joke that you will pick up when reading the forum.

First couple of minutes shows the one that FPT posted above (apparently the very first models, from 1951 looked like that, but there were a few enclosed cabs with rounded panels too)

Totally different vehicle to the Puch. One made by Benz in Germany and the other by Puch in Austria I believe.

Frank

I think you have a very rare collector there. If it is not the only one in Australia I would be surprised. Unless you have a date stamp on it my reading would put it between 1951 and 55 but I may be wrong.

I guess it was a special purpose job brought out by say a mining or exploration company or maybe a government department. Possibly the Mercedes distributor brought it out for a motor show novelty to test the Australian water?

There are quite a few of the mid-50's second series and as they get newer, more of each model.

It should be restored to as built if possible. I think you will find lots of stuff on line, including manuals, particularly from Europe.

Best of luck with your restoration.

These are awesome vehicles.

I spent quite a bit of time in Europe in the mid 60's and Mogs were everywhere.

I've always had a fascination with them.

I wouldn't say no to a Haflinger, even with it's 60K flat out top speed.
