I like the permanent fix.
There was 2 bolts on the David Brown with a similar issue. The head of the bolt was too close to the solid cast iron block to fit a ring or socket on it. Of course I did the right thing, I ground enough metal away from the head of the bolt and now I can access it easily with any choice I like.

In the good old days when on the spanners i had a "Half Moon" or the shape of a banana spanner. Not sure of the sizes . It was
a double ended ring spanner which was made for that starter motor job. It wrapped around the starter to get to that top bolt.
Another way be it all a bit "RUFF" is to slot the head of the bolt , then you can run a long s/driver along the top of the starter.
Screw it in most of the way then finish of with a ring spanner. If you won't to get really "Ruff" put the oxy on a ring spanner and
bend into a banana . Just my thoughts. "Desperate men must take desperate measures".

Had this issue with the 1/2" A/F nuts on the back uni on the Inter - got 7/16 A/F thick nuts and drilled and tapped out to 5/16 thread. Could get ring spanner on and do up properly. I was never quite happy with it before.

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,
Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

You can still buy those half-moon shaped spanners either new or at markets and swap meets but the cap-screw and allen key sounds good to me

Thinking is of 1/2" drive allen key with extension, not the bent type.

Hi Jarrod,
How can you drill a 7/16" hole down to a 5/16"?

Common Cobbba.
The nut was a 7/16" nut (across the flats) and he drilled the 1/4" thread and tapped it 5/16th".
This is something you would in the same situation.

You can get the Stahlwille rings that are incredibly thin ,and fit anywhere........they cost a fortune though,IIRC,a 1/2 &9/16 ring is $100,combi 1/2 about the same .
