When I got my little Inter ASW120, I was told it was from Zabel's near Gatton and they bought it ex Moonie oil line.
There's nothing on the forum and can't find much of anything on the net, either.
Does anyone know/remember what the project was really called or where I might find info or, hopefully.....piccies?
I'd love to know what trucks were used and what something as small as mine would have been doing.
Thanks in advance, Jarrod (ASW)

It was early 60's, J N Nicholson had an old cable blade D 6 with a side boom crane on that job, doing exactly what I don't know, it was all over when I started there in 63.

Trust me

Was there a bit about the Moonie pipeline in Rob Laurent's book, Leader the Australian Challenger?

Thanks for the replies. I have been to that museum, but didn't make the connection. I'll see if they still have any records.

Jarrod.

I e-mailed them and got a reply that all the records were destroyed in the '74 floods, but if I sent a picture and such he would ask a couple of the old hands for me.
Let's see what happens. It was a looong time ago, but you never know your luck.
Jarrod.

Moonie to Brisbane oil pipeline was started in June 1963. The pipeline was registered in Queensland as "Queensland Pipeline #1.

Bechtel Pacific Corporation were the construction mob.

The line was 10" diameter pipe from Japan, coming in 30 foot lengths.

Every 30 foot joint was welded. Every welded joint was x-ray tested, then the pipe was wrapped in plastic and buried.

Total length of the pipeline was 190 miles.

The two transport companies contracted to haul all the gear were J.N.Nicholson and Western Transport. At that time, Neil Mansell was a driver for Western Transport.

The pipeline was completed in October 1963, 59 days ahead of schedule. It was officially opened in April 1964 and oil first flowed in May 1964.

Total project cost was 4,500,000 quid, Aussie guys working on the project were making 50 quid a week.

So endeth the lesson. ;D ;D ;D ;D
