There would be a greater surface area to the outside face of the element, so it would make better sense to have the air flowing through from outer surface to inner surface so the accumulating dust doesn’t restrict the flow as quickly.

I beg to differ
The element is the same size inside or out as the sheet of paper has two sides that makes the element up so it has to be the same size each side
I think it would be more efficient to enter the element directly as is common on older Macks
If it would make any noticeable difference ? I doubt it
All the bends in the intake would do more to restrict it than the air cleaner

There were several diff versions used by TNT on the Ghosts... Depending on what year/batch... If you look at enough Ghost photos you'll see the different set ups

I can see what Paul is saying about the same amount of paper in the element b ut the difference that I se is the volume of air around the element. To my odd way of thinking there would be a larger volume of air aroun d the outside of the element than in the centre and this could be where a difference could occur.

..
.Doesnt the air flow direction have something to do with the garbage being
caught in the bowl area.

I think they are two different makes of air cleaner. The restored one is definitely correct plumbing (I have the same unit on both my OKA and Mack). There is a steel inner surround around the element that the incoming air hits causing it to swirl and dump dust into the can before entering the element' It also stops water directly hitting the element and sends it to the bottom of the can to drain out a duck-bill outlet.
The original looks like it gets its initial heavy particle separation from the intake cap . There must be some separation before the element or it would last 5 minutes in dusty conditions. Maybe someone can give info in the original?
