My mother used to relay the story about my great grandfather almost losing control of an eight in hand whilst performing before King George V at Windsor.

The reason behind this was the fancy gloves they had given him to wear for the occasion made it difficult for him to maintain a grip on the reins.
He was commended by the King afterwards for his quick action in discarding his gloves and pulling the team up bare handed!

No doubt it smarted somewhat!? :pinch:

And meanwhile here in Crystal Brook a local farmer was stopped by the local constabulary when he came into town using six white horses to pull his wagon - apparently this was only permissible for royalty! :oops:
Also, the last mounted trooper retired here in July 1949 :dry:
