Ummm ... I always thought timing started with No.1 at TDC. Am I wrong with the 392? What about other V8s? :-?

yeh, I thought all motors timed from #1. BISTBC
In the 90s a mate bought a new skiboat hull and a few of us helped put it all together. The only mechanic amongst us spent hours trying to start the motor after it was fitted, with no luck. We come back the next night and within minutes he had the motor going. When questioned about what he did, he said sheepishly that after thinking about it all day it dawned on him that as the motor was back to front in the hull he had timed it to #8 Once he timed it to #1 it fired straight up. ;D ;D ;D

IH V-8s are set off the #8 cyl @ TDC on the compression stroke, unlike most other American V8's that are set on the #1 cyl.

BUT my question is, why are there TWO timing marks (180 deg apart)?

I can recall the IH trucks still had the 392 option up until the late 1970's, yet I can't recall when they were introduced.

The 392 was available up to the end of 1986, but was dropped after that as it was not ULP compatable, which was compulsory from 1987 onwards.

as you know most inter fire trucks had the 392 till the end (prob why the fire trucks turned up to a fire that already had burnt itself out?) :-X

Compared to the pathetic excuses for fire engines that were around up to the 60s, a 392 ACCO was like an F1 racer 8-) 8-)

i remember in the 80s i was driving on victoria rd rozelle & i heard the siren, looked in the mirror and seen a inter fire truck racing up the hill .. i went to the left lane and slowed down to 60kmh so the truck could overtake me .... it never did ;)
