I think you will find the direction is reversed byvtge gears and linkage bnot electrically and the motor just keeps on running

Yeah with a crank sort of arrangement, I was meaning the motor poles must be reversed to obtain continuous rotation of the armature.
AC would be such a simple motor but I still cant work out how it goes on DC.
an interesting motor anyway.

Thanks guys for the additional comments & pointers. Unfortunately in hospital at moment recovering from back surgery, so not able to check out W/S motor for a while.

A quick look at the end with the nameplate,and it looks like there are two brush slots there.If there is no commutator on tha armature,then I reckon its come loose and been taken of....Also possible is the whole thing disintegrated .....the picture of the whole assy doesnt enlarge ,so I cant make it out.
