So, I struggled to get the air over hyd brakes to work efficiently, and, as I live in the mountains, with plenty in reserve. When the Ordnance Factory built these is seems that BHP had rolled joist on special, it is heavy!
After an "interesting" episode it was time for change so an old 4 spring BPW bogie set up was sourced and the float was turned on it's back for surgery. Unfortunately the replacement bogie showed evidence of more than a few crossings of the Nullabor so relined brake shoes and a full kit of bushes.
The old single point bogie was great but the brakes were crap.
Spray booth
Job done
cracker of a slewing yard crane - 5 ton on the hook
With this conversion I paid attention to tyre size and ratings which you really have to do your home work on as there are plenty of expensive brands that are only good for 100kph. I chose to use the 9.5R17.5 size as they sit a bit taller than the usual low profiles and can be had with 'L' or 'M' speed rating.

We managed to get the hydraulic brakes working well and the trailer passed a roadwortht on the original running gear, but ended up busting ears off a hub and given
a hub wasn't obtainable and the tires were all wearing in bad ways and with 3x the cost to replace a 8.25x15 tire compared to a 235-R17.5 we decided to bite the bullet and upgrade. 4.5ton telehandler flipped it like it was nothing and the 65Amp plasma made short work of the old trunnions. My brother and I did the whole thing start to driving out the gate in one weekend.
I'm not a fan of the single point suspension, the axles aren't kept in good enough alignment and the brake force makes the axle group pivot back on the main pivots, lifting the back wheels and flat spotting them when not loaded. Absolutely no regrets with the upgrade!
