All i know about them is they are not the easiest engine to rebuild,
In the early 70's i used to run the sunday papers to Rochampton in a D5N600, 318, my mate had a lot of trouble with the flywheel flange breaking off the crankshaft,
Austral motors here had new replacement engines lined up everywhere, my mate had at 3 engines sitting in his shed because Auatral didnt want them back,

i was running my AT4 600 series interstate on high speed runs ..never really had any troubles . . but i have heard that the earlier poly 318s broke cranks etc . . have you any pics of your old paper truck ? .. i can really only remember the early UD 5 tonners .. but my memory does go as far back as the old austin "grace Bros" removal trucks & the last of the leyland trucks on the lot

Have herd the same thing about the polys but not the later 318's. My dad had a 318 D5N 700 and it never missed a beat and would do 65mph.

my 318 definatly outperformed my 361 powered truck ..
also the 318-3 which was standard fitment to the 600 series hardly wear the bore ..prob a high nickel content block
