Kenny roof mount air intakes was created by
..g'day all .. the roof mounted air intake pipes looked pretty cool on a lot of our old Kenworth cabovers... just today eyeballed a very early 1972 Bayswater NTC 335 survivor that had one.. factory RH side only.. tucked up beside the original FrigKing aircon ...
...any pics or clues as to why this arrangement was introduced ?...apparently the Road Trains needed this requirement (severe service?)...
....does anyone know the real story to this interesting aside? ....cheers

Ifn eye'm aloud 2 think out loud
back of a COE would B like a vacuum sukn all the dust up n the higher the snorkels the better
but then the hi inlets can hit branches n low shed roofs when U tilt cab etc
have n the inlet forward of the rear of cab would make for cleaner air

We had dirt roads from the mill yards, our intakes mounted higher than the roof yet still behind the cab gave bad service. We had those glass bowl pre-filters and they did catch dirt at slow speed but useless once moving.
Generous sized Donaldsons would suck down the indicator as soon as it rained too, more proof that the intake was in the wrong spot.
Ended up making roof top mounted wings to divert airflow down the back of the cab and that worked.
I reckon KW tried anything that showed promise and those roof intakes couldn't get much more forward or higher.
Filtration capacity must have improved hugely, big power turbos need a lot of air or performance drops right off.
