I'll stand corrected. It was just something I read somewhere.

Blackduck you and DD are right, you can neither create or destroy matter and can only change its form ie solid, liquid, gas.

If you have, as the question asked, a big sealed container with the 1,000 litres of water in it and put a fire under it, the water would transition from frozen, to liquid to steam (big enough space for the gaseous water to expand) with absolutely no difference in weight measured if you had the whole thing resting on a scale.

All this technical BS that I put up is just a bit of info to try to explain the difference between volume, mass and displacement. The justification most blokes have for their argument has to do with floating ice and displacement of water, this has to do with change of volume which is not a comparative measure of weight or mass. If you want to compare the weight/mass of two things you must have the same size block or cup. The question did not stipulate that as you said.

The only answer was "No change" but when the boys started talking about volume and ice floating I could not help myself and geoffb got me running with the second part of the question "reason why."

Good open discussion :woohoo: :woohoo:
At the end of the day 1000 litres of water whether forzen or liquid is still the same as you have not introduced any out side influence
When had this discussion some say ice is lighter as you can sees oxygen bubbles thats not true
The only thing that alters is its volume as water I believe is the fluid that reacts in reverse to all other fliuds it expands on freezeing to a solid
The end of the wether frozen or liquid it is still H2O so its atomic weight doesn't change

Question:

Did this bridge have to be designed to withstand the additional weight of ship and
barge traffic, or just the weight of the water?

Answer:

It only needs to be designed to withstand the weight of the water.

Why?

A ship always displaces an amount of water that weighs the same as the ship;
regardless of how heavily a ship may be loaded.

Construct of the water link was started as early as the 1930"s, but due to World
War II and subsequent division of Germany, the work remained suspended till
1997. The aquiduct was finally completed and opened to the public in 2003.

Sort of reminds me of the old joke about the truck stopped for overloading. driver bangs violently on the side of the truck and scales suddenly show he is legal. When asked what he is carrying he says, parrots.

Two identical Landcruisers are stuck in very soft sand. Which one will get out easier if the tyres are let down to say 10psi. Both with mild tread pattern,
A. The one with the 750-16 cross plies
b The one with the 265-70R16 radials of the same height but much wider.
Why?

Sneaky question(s) Lang. A multiple choice, and then you want an explanation too! I won't go into footprints, friction, the 'wave' in front of the tyre, etc- it's actually quite simple: You're already stuck, so A, the 7.50x16, as they're skinnier and hence less of it to shovel out.

Edit: Further points for suitably answering "why weren't you down to 10 psi already?"
