Back in the 40's and 50's there were tax advantages importing components from Canada rather than the USA. ie part of the British empire and all that stuff.

Greetings, I can clarify things about these trucks as i have done quite a bit of research in order to make models of both the AT4-575 and AT4-775 which will be available soon in 1/43rd scale kit form.

According to a parts book that goes to 1967, there wasn't a cummins diesel V8 avialable from factory, only the 6 cylinder 464. The AT4 series ran from 1962 till 1971.

The 225 slant six engine was available from 1962 and was replaced by the Hemi 245 in 1970 and used in AT4 114, 129, 229, 329, 353, 460-6, 475-6, 560-6, 575-6.

The 313 V8 Poly engine was used from 1962 to 1964 and replaced in 1965 by the 318 V8. V8 engines were used in AT4-460, 475, 560, 575, 660, 675, 690.

The Perkins 6.354 (6 cyl 354 cid Diesel) was available as an option on AT4 660, 675, 690.

The 361 V8 and Cummins 160 (6 cyl 464 cid 160HP diesel) were only available in AT4 760 and 775

Hope that clarifies the details about available engines!

I have heard of Detroits and GM diesels being fitted but i'd assume they were non factory.

The Cummins 185 (470 cubic inch V8) might have been available in the D5N or possibly late AT4 (but i have no proof of this) because they are listed in the brochure for the flat nose trucks from 1973 with the Commer Cab, known as Dodge/Commers.

Mousey,

This is a AT4 675 (I think???) - as you've explained, this is the Perkins 6.354 diesel powered one, right??

Hi Joe,

It looks like definately a 6 series because of the spider wheels, 5 series down had the disc type wheels with 6 studs. 6 & 7 series had the split rims. The perkins 6-354 was optional on this truck from new.

For the 6 series a V8 was standard, the 313 'Poly' engine from 1962-64 and the 318 engine from 1965-71, with the Perkins as an option.

There were 3 models in the 6 series lineup, 660, 675 and 690, and there are 2 ways u can find out whether it is a 660, 675 or 690...the first obvious way is via the ID tag on the firewall which also gives u the paint code which is also interesting to know, they also used to have a small badge saying 660, 675 or 690 on the side near the Dodge badge....

The other way if u don't have access under the bonnet to find out the model is by measuring the wheelbase, because that's what the numbers mean - tonnage and wheelbase.. eg..a 660 has a 160" wb, 675 has a 175" wb and 690 has a 190"wb because the second 2 digits in the model number, eg 660, the '60' means wheelbase+100 inches ... (commer used the same system).... so... if this is a 675 it is a 6 tonner with a 175" wb, but if u measure it and it hasn't been modified then u can find out exactly what model it is or what model it should be just by doing that.

You can apply the same forumula to any Dodge truck in the model range, for eg an AT4-353 is a 3 tonner with a 153" wheelbase

The only exception to this is prime movers, which had a custom shortened wheelbase to what the customer ordered.

You can now be a Dodge AT4 expert! hehe

p.s .. if this is a 675 with factory diesel the actual designation is AT4-675D

A mockup of my 1/43rd AT4-775 model kit can be seen at

I'm also doing the AT4-575 table top, 225 slant 6 version.

I'll have pictures of finished samples up soon and they'll be available as kits along with AACO's, ACCO's, AB inters, Commer knockers and the Army AACO Mk3

Hope that helps,
Mousey !

Mousey,

The 675 badges (well, the one on the driver's side) have been removed or has fallen off - but the imprint from the back of the badge is still visible on the guard! And it is a Perkins diesel powered truck as the exhaust pipe was black and sooty - I might try and get one of these tough old girls.... as long as the cab isn't rusty! I need something to do on weekends!
