Love that answer Roderick, technically it is correct but a little closer to the location would be better. Here's a hint, the location is associated with horses

I went past about three south of Katherine in 1974; there will be others north of it.
I can't remember names.
The places with names have proper airstrips.
The emergency ones don't show on road maps.
I have just been to a road map. The only horse name which stands out is Hayes (a trainer).

There are more than 30 RFDS highway strips in Australia. I still am keen on the Silver City Highway But if there is a horse connection what about the one between Windorah and Birdsville?

Well Lang you have got closest so far. A bit cryptic but another clue ---- it's near a Creek that is a reasonably common name, found one at Googong, Nymboi-Binderay National Park , and a book of the same name by June Bradley.

You got it Hayseed, Packsaddle near Shannons Creek. I worked on a Station south of there. Could ride all day and see no-one, discovered some waterholes with rock art but we were told to never reveal the location. Came across the biggest feral cat I have ever seen in one of the creek beds. At the time I thought it must have been a lion escaped from a circus and never mustered that paddock without a rifle. We got some new bikes with dual range transmissions that allowed me to chase goats up some very big hills. One day I chased some up a rocky cliff but could not find a way to get back down, in the end I stopped on a cliff edge and simply pushed the bike over. Then I slid down on my rear. Had to use a rock to "adjust" the controls to get home. The boss was not impressed with the condition of his new bike. Naturally we had a horrific drought one year and de-stocked. Boss thought he may as well keep us busy so we dug a big hole and formed a concrete swimming pool seeing how we were carting drinking water it was hard to see the logic.
Good times especially if we get to Packsaddle, they had beer......
