When you stake a side wall ---and have run out of spares or got a wire sticking out on the inside of a tyre---Take a legth of rust band--- cut it to suit inside of tyre placed crosswise inside tyre--- bevel the cut ends to fit inside the bead and reassemble the tyre and full circle rust band---carefully fit tyre to rim without disturbing the GAITER----hook up air line--- blow it up and it will get you home---can be done with 4wd tyres also---this of course was in the days before tubeless.

I had been working round Perth for a couple of years late 70`s on local for the mob that Iused to cart E-W for---(call it a gap year) Tyres never got hot --I was hardly ever in top gear. So I am useing up all my old tyres that are lying around and some that had come from Melway country that had been used for packing in the rail trucks.
Friday Arvo came round--- get a call into office---'' we can`t find a truck back loading to the east, The 20 ton of spuds you just picked up have to be in Dubbo first thing Tuesday morning-- go home get your gates and gear and go!!!
Well after all that time home I had to find all tyre levers air lines wheel braces and spares .Took 4 on the trailer rack 2 in the load and half a dozen tubes.

Left Perth that night and kept checking every 200 ks pulled up 40 ks east of Nullarbour road house for a kwick camp--- Woke up 3 flats bugger-- That was the start of it---finally made it to Dubbo Tuesday early-- morning Unloaded --then across to Smithtown for a load of Milo.Headed on towards the West--- by the time I got back to Ceduna I was down to one half good spare and 2 or three daggy ones --I bought a couple of new tubes in Ceduna and headed for home--Two days later--- several flats and Nullarbour Gaiter`s later I got to Perth with one servicable tube left and that had 2 patches on.
A trip I would not like to repeat

When I went back onto E-W full time I had tubeless tyres and for the first 13 months and 26 trips-- to Sydney and back I never had a flat.

with 50 tyres on the ground with the KW SAR n 2x8 Dolly+ 3x8 drake float I went to Nth of Albury to the pulp mill (me thinks) loaded a 60 t crawler crane to bring back to Melbourne
But B 4 we even got to Albury we had 6 caps shed there skin
We had listend to a tyre salesamn th@ insisted on dragn out sum ol 7.50x15 small float tyres from our grave yard scrap heap n said " we take the outer layer of wire off n recap m ...all guaranteed " FFS... every one of m shed the skin MT travel n also we had the normal 4 flats etc

All in a days work..lucky we had the escort car loaded with spares
