Ah Yes, the Nullabor Gaiter. As well as bits of rust band I have used 2 gallon ice-cream tins that cafes used to have for bulk ice-cream. You run over them 'til they are flat and insert them into the tyre. If your lorry goes faster than about 40 mph you have to use two, a dummy one to balance the one covering the fault. As for full circle liners they were supplied by tire companies to promote the sale of tubes. I only fell for one of these useless bloody things once. When your
Michelin tyre of any other brand of steel tyre got "The Million Punctures" , wire on the inside of the tyre, you split an old tube and used that for a liner, they didn't eat the tube with the air in it like those other mongrels.
10 punctures in one trip. You lucky bastard. My record was 32. It was my first trip and the first flat was in the dock at Ansetts while loading. From there it went downhill. The trip was Sydney to Adelaide to Inverell to Brisbane to Dalby to Sydney. The lorry had 16 tyres. On average I changed them all twice. On the River Road (Wilcania to Bourke) the jack failed and I waited for ten hours for the next truck to come along and lend me a jack. The truck was an L model 90 with a 6/71 GM and vacuum over oil brakes so we had no air. The trailer was a closed bogie running 9.00 20's. Tyres were fixed where they went down and then blown up at the first air supply I came to. One night at Narrabri after dinner when someone must have dropped something in my tea and I found myself full of energy I changed six around to get better matches. Beware the fantom tea molester. Ahhh, I hear you say , those were the good old days. I don't bloody think so. A man must have been struck down with FITH syndrome. F***ed In The Head. BTW each leg of that first trip had a payload of about 25 tons. Not them tonne things we cart today, real ones.
