It’s the late 1950s[not so: 1960s vehicles, possibly early 1970s numberplates], and& ambulances are dropping off patients to Royal Melbourne Hospital's casualty department for urgent care. While a few things have changed since then, our ED is still one of the busiest in the state as we care for over 4000 trauma patients each year.

In yesterday's blog I shared a photo from the Royal Melbourne Hospital showing ambulances parked outside the building in the 1950s. [no, late 1960s maybe early 1970s].
The tweet reached Ambulance Victoria chief executive Tony Walker, who tweeted out an additional photo that shows just how much ambulances have changed over the past century.
It turns out there's an Ambulance Victoria museum that showcases plenty of old model ambulances that would once have been seen zipping urgently through city streets.
Ambulances from the past. Photo: Craig Butt Interestingly, these vintage ambulances lack one feature that modern ambulances require - they likely would not have been equipped to carry obese passengers. Since 2007, Ambulance Victoria has had 11 "complex patient ambulance vehicles" in its fleet to transport overweight or obese patients, but paramedics say these are rarely available.
And I reported in 2015 how paramedics were using new technologies such as hydraulic stretchers to help transfer certain patients into ambulances because paramedics had sustained back injuries doing the heavy lifting themselves.

Mid 1960s at Royal Melbourne Hospital. The vehicles are ~1964; the J numberplates are pre 1968. [edited to take in a helpful reply].
At the ambulance museum.

The J series of Victorian Numberplates would have been issued prior to 1968. My family had a 1968 model Austin 1800 which had original registration of KCL010.
As is usual for a family that named vehicles, she was called KCjolo
cheers,
Pip

There is a great Ambulance museum at Temora NSW. Great place to visit. Have a look at the aircraft museum while you're there.
