This is the last of my camel photos which I have found to date. I have also used up all of my camel songs and jokes.

There is a sternwheel paddleboat Dromedary on the Murray-Darling system. It is fairly new, and was bought by the proprietor of a camel-safari farm near Morgan (SA). It is heading up the Darling, aiming for Bourke, by exploiting water levels to get under a bridge and over some weirs, and a craning to get above the weir forming Menindie Lakes.

Head to this open-access thread, with lots of photos:
< www.paddleducks.co.uk/smf/index.php?topi...msg33770#msg33770> ;

The poster is a famous one from the 1930s. Commonwealth Railways made lots of posters through the years, to encourage tourism. Many are available as replicas.

Wake up Australia...Be Fair !
by Brian Spittle

A variation on Advance Australia Fair]

Australians all, let us admit
that we were never free
Our soils and wealth are so much shit
(but we do live by the sea)

Our beauty is indeed quite rare
and rather hard to see
So if we must sing let it be
'Live on the periphery !'

Beneath the Southern Cross we stand
but however hard we stare
The cross is lost in a haze of light
cast by the city's glare

The glowing towers which make some rich
pollute the evening air
You migrants lured to share our plains
by all means have a treat
Try living on a desert farm
but don't expect to eat
Camels are our models here
they drink but once a week

Are we so smart ? Are we quite sure ?
that when cheap oil gives out
That when the shortages add up
we'll have the guts to shout
'Come share our boundless bloody plains
we have little else to share !'

Australians all, let us admit
that we were never free.....

This is from a Melbourne 'Herald Sun' at the start of November: a camel race on a St Kilda (Vic.) beach.
Where near Melbourne is there a camel-hire establishment?

This is the second photo from a Tues.19.11.13 Melbourne Herald Sun article on newspaper history, also photographed in Flinders St in front of the office.

A snippet from Fri.22.11 Melbourne Herald Sun:
Australia's feral-camel population numbers around 300 000, far fewer than the 1m generally cited, a new study showed yesterday after a 4 year cull. Wild camels have roamed the outback since they were introduced as pack animals in the 19th century.

I have three photos up already, at reply 84 in this thread. With a new interest in Cuba after the visit by another member, I have prepared the rest of my Cuba photos. Most were not taken of the vehicle purposely; these are crops of backgrounds from various train photos, and have been pushed to/beyond their technical limits. Flickr has been a disaster for 9 months; today only two of the five are providing the export links, so three more wait for another time.
