Why did the elephant wear ripple-sole shoes?
Respecting the commencer of this thread, I do have some more serious commercial animal transport for a few days hence, but let's have fun while we can.

I can still remember year 8, so I do know. I'll post you a snailmail letter with the answer.

Elephants were used extensively in south-east Asia for hauling teak or other timber out of a forest, and to a sawmill. Within minutes of putting up my elephant photo, I resumed planning my forthcoming China tour to forestry railway lines, and the opening photo of one research document showed a statue of an elephant at one of the depots:

I have gone to a trailer for the 1956 'Around the world in 80 days', and didn't see either elephant scene. I also went to the overblown 1990s remake, and didn't see an elephant.
Frivolous:
One of the posts on the preceding page:
How do you put four elephants into a Mini Minor?
Two in the front, two in the back, trunks in the boot.
How do you put four horses into a Mini Minor?
You can't, it is full of elephants.
Groucho Marx: One morning I shot an elephant in my pyjamas. How he got into them, I don't know. Then we tried to remove the tusks, but they were embedded so firmly we couldn't budge them. In Alabama, the tusks are looser.
