like BigCam said....run a line straight from the pump into a bucket....eliminates everything bar the pump.....
Cummins pumps are self bleeding so don't go messing with plugs or slotted fittings on the pump itself...wasting your time....
the fuel filter will always be 3/4 full when you remove it...thats normal....if its full its blocked!!!
so....if you run it out of a bucket first up give it some snap revs,and all the way up to to the governor to clear any air out,then let it idle.
if it still hunts or dies after 5 seconds or so then you have pump seal problems.
BUT.....where is the tacho shaft???...in the main body of the pump or in the front cover near where it bolts to the air compressor????
if its in the main body then it can suck air thru there.....get a big dob of grease and force it into and around the shaft....start the engine and watch the grease....if it gets sucked down the the tacho seal is gone....pushing more in will keep you going on a short trip...if the tacho drive is in the front cover and the engine still runs erratic after running out of a bucket then the pump front seals are shot and you are screwed!!

Was a repower as Newto said Cam.
Was a reasonably tidy job too.
Found a BIG birds nest down the air cleaner snorkel and 2 dead budgies.

Well you learn something every day hey..
Never knew 3070s came out with GMs..let alone 8V92s..
Wow.
Can remember a T-Pot or two with 6V92s...
Still stick with the nine an thrippence but.. :D

any evidence of how the budgies died BC???
if i remember correctly budgie bricking was outlawed back in the early 70's......you may have stumbled onto an old cold case......budgies bricked to death and hidden on a 3070.... orrrr...was it just a case of detroit fumes and oil contamination????

...there's only one reason you'll see a bloody birds nest down the air intake....those plastic Donaldson rams eventually lose the mesh and by that stage it's open slather for any nesting critter that happens by! ;D ;D :o

Well the mesh had let go from one side.
My guess is the truck had been sitting for a while with the missing mesh and then someone fired it up and compacted the nest which in turn killed the birds.
Man, there was some sticks down there.

Agree totally with Newto. What I would say though is that it is quite normal if you don't rev a Cummins hard after changing the fuel filter for it to hunt, miss and die. Then you have to wind it over on the starter until it bleeds itself again.
