So to answer the question about fitting a turbo and will it increase performance and how clean it runs

Not sure you asked about performance but heres my thoughts that are probably wrong

A diesel motor will blow smoke until the air fuel mixture ratio is correct, all the fuel is getting burnt
Once all the fuel is getting burnt it wont smoke as the smoke is unburnt fuel

So to get further into this line of thinking we have understand this

So if you dont have a turbo and add one that is sized correctly will enable you to obtain that mixture balance far earlier

Now I would start by doing some simple googling to size a turbo

The turbo should add power and clean the exhaust up, but only to a point, once the exhaust is clean that is all the power you can obtain as all the fuel is getting burnt

A cheap Chinese turbo is probably cheaper than sourcing one from the wreckers and it is probably higher quality

Anyway I think it would be worth the experiment

Dont know about the Hi clone and wouldn't really pass an opinion either way

I think a lot of people bag the pommy gear but technology was a long way from say even 30 years ago and it did a good job for what it was

And the aircleaner question, could you get one of those aircleaner restriction indictors and actually see if it is a issue ?
