Swishman,

I do agree with you on RFW - RFW was not like Leader... their trucks were custom built to whatever off- and on- road work the customer needed to do and featured Scania, Detroit, Cummins, UD Nissan Diesel and Caterpillar engines, RoadRanger gearboxes and Eaton diffs....

Me and Greenie are talking about true blue Aussie designed and built trucks, Swishman - like RFW and Leader!!!

Hi Swishy.

This is the way I see it, Leaders were designed and built by Aussies for Aussies, using Aussie cash and Aussie knowhow, the vast majority of bits were sourced in Australia and the labour was Australian.

Acco's and Inters , OK, they were made/put together in Aust, but by overseas interests/company, some stuff was designed in Aust but with the vast majority of bits sourced from overseas, IH America.

Atkinsons, as above.

KW, same again, as above.

RFW, forgot about them blighters, OK, will have to add them to the list of Aussie trucks, about the same as Leaders but FAR fewer were ever built, they were a very specialized builder of special vehicles.

Wonder how many are still on road and working, better make that out in the scrub, eh ?

OK Greenie
I've got the Leader book but ain't read it as yet
I'm more interested in the Mack content
I always thort Leaders were a poor mans Mack
LOL
Andersons were Mack Agent Distributor
N later assembled the Macks n gradually introduced more Australian content in the Macks
Mack Australia B 4 the Yanks took over also had COE mack cabs made locally in fibreglass
when Andersons n Mack split Andersons took all their content with them the Fibre Glass cab mould th@ twaz originally lifted off a mack cab
Th@ is one V: of the story

Greenie,

You've hit 'er smack bang on the head there, brother! I think ole Cyril had visions to make Leader a formidable force on Australia's roads but it never came to fruition - Leader closed in 1983 after just over 1000 trucks were built!

Swishman,

Can I also echo what Greenie said about the Leader book??? You will bloody love it!!! I will tell you both now how I became so fascinated with Leaders: I was coming home from Sydney one rainy day and I saw a nice hot pink Readymix one - hence my fascination with them ever since!

FWIW

RFW
RFW (Robert F Whitehead) is an Australian specialist manufacturer of all wheel drive trucks.

This eight wheel drive 8x8 RFW truck chassis is towing what became a six wheel drive 6x6 trailer when a second engine and transmission were added to make a 14x14. The trailer unit is computer controlled to keep in-synch with the prime mover. The glamorous unit has a most unglamorous job, having been fitted with specialist equipment for cleaning Queensland sewers!

Better make that BRISBANE City Council sewers. Still runnin' around too.

The Brisbane City Council used to have a weird bunch working for them, the jokers that did the ordering, were quite willing to listen to new ideas, then actually have a go at any real good idea that come along, some ideas worked, some didn't.

They even had Kenworth build a K 100 series TRI DRIVE, twin steer tray truck with the low line cab and fitted with a heavy tilt tray, to carry around their Komatsu dozer, similar in size to a D8. The Komatsu used to be piggy backed around on a Drake 3 row of 8, pulled by a puss box slim line F model Mack, this was a bit awkward to get to some places, so they had the KW special built. Turned out to be a winner, could even get down a lane way with the KW, even with the Komatsu on board.
