RE:1. Overloading. These engines are rated at a MAXIMUM of 70,000lbs GCM (31760 kg). Many greedy people started pulling tri-axle semis, dog trailers, and 44 tonne GCM's with them.
They won't stand this amount of overloading for very long.
with the right gearing
n U only runit @ the correct rev range without over reving or luggn the beast
it should not harm a genuine real donk (like a screemer)
it may B a bit slower as it'd B in a lower cog hole but should get the job dun (eventually)
Cripes..... even a holden 6 cylinder car motor could move many many tons of truck ifn U had nuff cogboxes (gearing) hooked up in the drive line
U may get passed by a turtle or snail but could B dun
May B Lt Red needs to look @ a real motor like a screemer
LOL
Both Cat n Cumminz
ifn U want 2 do one up
U need to visit the bank manager with cap in hand
screemer parts available @ all local corner stores with just a poket full of change $$
LOL

a good 6v71 i like that!!!!
Better cherish it...it'd be the only good one they built!
You would need to be able to buy parts atthe corner shop swish..otherwise ya'd need a tow truck every hundred yards!

Swishy - The simple fact of the matter is, that overloading beyond an engines recommended limit, will shorten its life.
Yes, you CAN pull 44 tonnes with a 3208 .. but these are a LIGHT to MEDIUM duty engine .. so why would you want a boy doing a man's job?
The original charter for the 3208 was from Ford. They came to Caterpillar around 1964, and wanted a lightweight, light-to-medium duty engine, that could replace the big petrol engines that were falling out of favour in trucks, in the early 1960's.
The designed use of the 1100 series V8, as they were originally known, was for installation in garbage trucks, school buses, motor homes, and any other urban, light-to-medium-duty application, where the useage was stop-go, and lots of idling, and light loads.
The haulage of heavy duty loads involves extended periods of lugging and full throttle. These little Cat V8's won't tolerate extended periods of maximum load .. they were designed to be as light as possible, not as strong as possible.
They first appeared in Ford trucks in 1967 as the Ford-Caterpillar 1100 series engine. These engines were never designed to be turboed.
These early engines had some substantial design faults. The oil pump suction lines were too small a diameter, and the oil pump would cavitate on cold mornings.
You'd crank the donk up and it would have no oil pressure, and it wouldn't come up, until you shut the engine down and re-started it.
The water pumps were too small, and they had cooling problems. The conrods, gudgeon bushings, and numerous other components were too light.
In 1981, Cat did a substantial re-design of the engine, and it got bigger oil lines, bigger water pump, re-designed injection pump, a new block, heavier conrods and little end bushings. Three ring pistons were introduced for turbo applications, and turbocharged 3208's appeared.
Cat decided they had now a decent motor, and rated one configuration of the 3208 as a "construction" build, and they began to install the engine in some Caterpillar earthmoving lines (613 scraper and 225 excavator) as a medium-duty construction engine. It was also fitted to the larger Cat (Towmotor) forklifts.
As a result, people decided this engine was now a heavy duty engine, and started to abuse it, by overloading. They still blew up, but the blow-ups could nearly all be traced back to the undesirable useage conditions I stated in my initial post.
If kept to their recommended limits, these engines are an economical, fast and responsive little engine .. but a heavy duty engine, they're not. Little Reds indicated use, is an ideal application for the 3208.
Yes, you can make engines do what they were never intended to do. I've pulled the likes of 1000 gallon, 4 wheel fuel tankers weighing over 5 tonnes, with 202 Holden utes.
The trouble is, you then find tops coming off 202 pistons within a relatively short time. Horse for courses, you use the right unit for the job at hand.
