Your load was illegal for at least 3 reasons, all to do with divisible loads.

Did the Pilot/Escort have signs?

You're a brave man.

Not brave, silly or stupid or many other words could be used to describe that misadventure

As a after thought

Since that near brush with stupidity I made it my business to learn more about permits, pilot vehicles and the like amd found that in QLD at least the permit was free back then and even in Vic it is no hassle at all

It maybe different in the big city but certainly in rural areas that I muck about in it is all done over the phone

Have carted many big loads since then and have never had any dramas
So dunno why I was so worried all those years ago

Hayseed this is "A Few Good Yarns". You can't expect a good story to be ruined by facts.

Being picked up on detail and completely f....g a good story is a practice most wives delight in. Paul has a good record on detailed accurate information where required so I think we should let this one (and every other story on this thread) go through to the keeper.

Just my opinion to keep it fun.

A couple of years ago I was escorting a rather large Yacht, with a 30metre mast, from Port Kembla to Woolich Marina.

To get there we needed to Turn right off Burns Bay Road onto Church Street which is an uphill start so a bit of fun for the truck.

There's a set of lights there and it can be a tight pinch when the trailer is extended to the max and the light cycle is also a bit short.

To overcome the short cycle we would all bunch up and the tail car would pull up beside the trailer so we all got around in the one cycle.

This night the driver missed a gear shift and basically stopped halfway through the intersection. no problem find that lost gear and get going.

By this time I (tail vehicle) had snuck up too far beside the trailer and as it moved off again it was going to crush my car against the traffic light pole.

To avert a minor disaster I accelerated further up beside the trailer and was forced to also climb over the medium strip at a good speed.

We were all having a bit of a laugh at how stupid we were when we noticed on our right a Random Breath Testing unit about 30 metres away.

We'd bent so many rules we were sure to be busted. The mast was hanging out both back and front way more than it should

We gingerly drove on and the Police paid us no attention. They can't have missed the scene, what with beacons flashing and cars bouncing over the median but they left us alone.

The other Pilot and I left the truck at the Marina and set off home hoping the RBT had gone. It hadn't and when we got to the intersection we stopped too far short of the sensors so the lights wouldn't change.

We had a discussion about the lights and then noticed we were short of the lights. Still the Police didn't do anything, not even call us in for a breath check. I sure would have as we looked like a bunch of loonies making a real bad job of being professional.

We all made it home safe and sound but still laugh about that night as one big screw up.
