The Green Commer original was bought when my father carted concrete from corryong up to the Snowy Mountains scheme in 1965. The bull bar on the front was to help stop the truck occasionally. He said they made it wrap around the cab slightly so that if he couldn't stop he would run it along the embankment....The concrete boxes were lifted on an off the trucks. That truck went on to being a super spreader and prime mover

This comer ran into some trouble....

I was working at Eucumbene portal in 1957 and all of the L.O.D. (licensed owner drivers) Transport were NR Mack,s most with ragtop cabs and 25 ton bulk cement silo,s on the back. All were 6-71 powered and most had Allison auto trans too.

One of my favourite subjects, this is a shot of the Mighty Thorneycroft Antars traversing the access road to Tumut 1 underground power station with a concrete block test load with their petrol powered engines, (later replaced with diesels). photo credit to National Library or National Archives.

A great shot which I haven't seen before. Must be the first use of Armco barrier in Australia, no expense spared, although there doesn't seem to be much of a berm at the end of the zigzag. (wonder if they went down the previous leg in reverse or ran around the trailer? Or maybe they are actually reversing UP ?)

Mammoth, I think they went down the first leg facing down and then rotated the PM's and then down the next leg.

Another couple of shots, from Phil Rye's collection...
The big rear view mirrors look real handy...

Great pics. The road in image 14 is exactly as it is today, plus a few more trees. There is just enough room to turn a normal semi around in, in 2 goes. Southbound has done a cupla loads in and out of there lately. It's 6k's of a very steep incline, then back in 400 mtrs underground.

I'd rather have tools that I don't need, than not have the tools I do need.
