Can you lift a lid on the box for a look?
If you cant I would just pull the box out for a look, I doubt it is anything major if you heard grinding etc

I d certainly be for lifting the lid....sounds like the problem is in the selectors.....some of the euro boxes have weird stuff like balls dropping into holes in sleeves etc........ truck fixers now charge up to $300/hr ,so that gives a lot of margin for a tube of silastic or two.

I was going to suggest a look at the selector forks for wear or adjustment. So that makes that gearbox manual look enticing and having a look inside before jumping off the cliff.
What JOHNK suggests makes a lot of sense and worth a look.

Stop Panicking!
Finally got a set of instructions from a French site. My French is pretty good but technical French required the dictionary but eventually solved the problem. Google translate is a farce when it comes to technical language.
Firstly the gear stick linkage settings given by an American site were completely ballsed up requiring superhuman wrist work to snap the stick far left and right for high/low range.
Once that was all adjusted, still locked in neutral trying to get reverse.
On the side of the box there is a large device with huit raccord pneumatiques and associated tuyans d'air. I undid these raccords following the instructions and removed the whole unit. This unit shifts from grande portee to petite portee. But it also has a lockout to stop you getting low and reverse in grand portee.
The fault finder explained the piston moves enough to get grande and petite vitesse but does not move the extra couple of millimetres to free the reverse lockout. Disassembly of numerous tiny springs and screws and squirting brake cleaner into every gallery freed up the movement.
Assembled once more with all the raccords pneumatiques tight and suddenly the whole gear shift is as smooth as a new..................Renault!
Thanks for the advice but thankfully no major operation required. As they say. work your way up from the easy stuff no matter how sure you believe it will be the hard (and expensive) solution.

Like most things, simple as, I never learnt another language apart from Stralian and in more recent years Swishtopian but even I got the gist
Glad it is sorted, these Euro jobbies are usually smooth as silk compared to Yanky land stuff and make the Pommy gear feel like it is from a few Ice ages ago

Nice touch with the French Lang, Miss Comely would be surprised Sarge still remembers after 50 years. I remember her as well, very appropriate name.
