I hear you John, I am struggling to walk away from Margo when I park her near people feeling proud and cool cos I am a bit nervous that she will piddle a bit of coolant out and make a mess. Thank you everyone as always, your advice is away appreciated. I will clean it coolant system out this weekend and thinking I will fit a thero fan and catch can too while I am at it.

FWIW
When water is heated it expands
th@'s why when U look down the neck of the radiator after a run when it reached normal water temp and then cools
U can C the water level a cupla inches down the neck of filler
the idea of a pressure radiator cap is to dump excess water
unless U B runnin a header tank where it can push the hot water out of radiator to header tank n suk it back in as it cools
Guys Correct me ifn rong ........ again
LOL

That’s what I have always thought too swishy. I was just getting confused, last car I built without a header tank or over flow was my LJ Torana, everything since then I have had either overflow tanks on the rotaries I have built or factory header tanks.

Dan, the early system, like yours had a pressure cap used to raise the boiling point of the coolant. The cap had just one seal, at the bottom where it contacted the neck of the radiator. It allowed excess water out as needed but only sucked air in as it cooled.
The sealed system with an overflow tank has an extra seal under the top of the cap to prevent air being drawn in, causing coolant to be returned from the overflow. If you want to fit an external tank, you should have no trouble getting the cap to suit.

In saying all of the above. just top it up before you go and if it doesn't overheat, don't worry about a little dribble. It happens to the best of us as we get older.
