The coal trucks worked two 12 hour shifts, 5 or 6 days a week depending on the demand for coal at the steelworks or for export. Thanks everyone for the comments on the rating of the diffs.

Do you have any idea what sort of distances the hauls were

Forgive me for asking obviously stupid questions but I have no idea about this stuff at all and am curious
It must of been a good money earner back in the day for those that managed to get a contract hauling coal, I gather this is in the Hunter Valley area but thats only a guess

Coal paid well. Some coal was out of the Hunter and a lot out of the Burragorang valley nsw. (Around The Oaks, Camden area).

Paul. Pt Kembla to Appin and return was about 90 kilometers, only loaded one way . Over the years they also had the contract to cart coal out of Westcliff , Yellowrock, Avon and Huntley. When Heggie's merged and became Heggie's Bulkhaul Limited the trucks started carting out of the Burragorang Valley. 44 Minutes Huntley to Tallawarra and back in an AEC or Leyland, less than 30 minutes in a 8V71GM Kenworth depending on the traffic while crossing the Princes Hwy which only got more congested until the Dapto bypass was constructed.

Hard job on drivers and gear - narrow roads, hilly country and mixed traffic.

The middle photo is a different style tipper
I wonder if they made their own tipping trailers in the beginning ?

It is also the third trailer in the bottom photo.

Can i see 3 words (maybe a makers name?) directly below the number plate? It looks a little too definite just to be random failing paint. It looks a bit like FREIGHTER INDUSTRIES xxxxx would fit, but that could easily be imaginative thinking on my part.

Certainly not many lights on the back!

Brett.
