A customer of mine pulled in one day in his near new Range Rover. he had just had the disc brake pads done at the Range Rover dealers ,and was heading for the sticks ........anyway,back of the car was covered in stinky diff oil......the mechanic had obviously never seen a full floating (truck type) hub before, and the bearing adjustment was at least 1/4 " loose ,and oil pouring out of both sides, covering wheels and tyres. He d already had several skids around corners.......The new discs and pads were destroyed ,as well as oil soaked.......The dealer offered to pick up and repair it,but Sid was manager of a tourist resort and had to be there ,so I fixed it for him ,after he went back to the dealers in a taxi to get parts.

But the ones who call themselves mechanics, but then don't do the job, or replace the parts or simply try to rip people off and lord over them, trying to take advantage of peoples helplessness and dependence on them, they give mechanics a BAD name... [The ones who just paint the part and put it back in might as well call themselves painters]...

GOOD MECHANICS WHO KNOWS THEIR STUFF IS WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN GOLD!!!

People who make things work ARE mechanics - people who make things break, don't deserve that name!!!

On that note: Does anyone no a good mechanic who is into old vehicles in Sydney ???

Good luck within bad luck. And at least the mechanic replaced the parts... ...and he has you as a friend...

Terra, keep the story going, we all want to see the happy outcome. As to your disappearing posts, some people type their reply in Word or similar program than copy and paste. Never gets lost that way.

A lot of US vehicle manuals specify high torque figures for axle nuts, and this confuses many people, and they dont realise the high torque is to seat the bearings, subsequently the axle nut must be backed off to provide a running clearance........Leylands also did this with the reduction axles ,but the bearing races had steel spacers between them ,and no matter how tight the axle nuts ,bearing clearance wasnt affected.....Foolproof bearing adjustment ,provided the spacers were put back in .
